There is an estimated 35 million acres of Kentucky 31 tall fescue growing in the U.S. While this grass has taken a bad rap for it's dreaded endophyte, we have found that there does exist cattle which can actually perform very well on it. The Dutch Creek cowherd has evolved into one which is highly fescue adapted by adhering to a July/August breeding season which coincides with the fescue's maximum endophyte toxicity period. Quite simply, those females not fescue adapted will cull themselves out of the herd by failing to re-breed. And after following this practice for many generations we believe we have assembled a herd of cows which can not only survive on fescue but can actually thrive on it. Pay us a visit during the heat of the summer to see for yourself!
