There is an estimated 35 million acres of Kentucky 31 tall fescue growing in the U.S. While this grass has garnered a negative reputation due to its dreaded endophyte, we have discovered that certain cattle can actually thrive on it. The Dutch Creek cowherd has evolved into a herd that exhibits impressive cattle adaptation by adhering to a July/August breeding season, which coincides with the fescue's peak endophyte toxicity period. Simply put, females that are not well-adapted will naturally cull themselves from the herd by failing to re-breed. After following this practice for many generations, we believe we have developed a herd of cows that can not only survive on tall fescue but truly thrive on it.
