About Us

Welcome to the Dutch Creek Angus Forage Genetics website. We created our herd and this website for those looking for practical cattle which can be profitable in an all-forage environment. Our mission statement is set forth in our name, "Angus Forage Genetics" with a laser like focus on the maternal end of the business. Angus cows have historically been recognized for their superior maternal qualities, but over the past several decades seedstock producers have been on a quest to create a "one size fits all" animal. Big mistake! One only has to study the great strides in efficiency made by the poultry and swine industries to realize that the beef industry has failed to give significant thought to becoming a more cost competitive producer of red meat. Unquestionably, mainstream Angus genetics, while playing an important role as a terminal cross, are simply incapable of producing an efficient, fertile female which can function and reproduce every 365 days in a low cost, all forage environment for a long, long time. They are simply too big and too costly to maintain to return a profit to their owners. For 37 years the Dutch Creek breeding program has been focused on creating a more productive and efficient cowherd through the linebreeding of fertile, long-lived cows, some of which have weaned 4 to 5 tons of calves in their lifetimes. Therefore, it is not surprising that genomic testing of the Dutch Creek cowherd reveals reproductive (fertility) scores and dry matter intake efficiency scores at the extreme top end of the Angus breed. According to Dr. Cliff Lamb of Texas A&M University, pregnancy rate has a 4 times greater economic impact than any other trait, and reproductive efficiency is more important than growth or carcass traits for the cow/calf producer. Our genomic test results confirm that by incorporating Dutch Creek genetics into your cowherd you will maximize maternal output through more efficient utilization of your forage resources while minimizing the costs associated with replacing and/or maintaining open cows. As the late Dr. Bob Taylor of Colorado State University once said, "profitable cattle are usually productive, but productive cattle are not always profitable". We hope you enjoy your visit to our website and encourage you to contact us with your questions. And remember, genomic testing takes the guesswork out of seedstock selection. Thanks for visiting!!

A Family Tradition

Dutch Creek Angus was founded by Doug & Susan Schlosnagle in 1982. Together, they purchased the farm as newlyweds and recent graduates from the University of Kentucky. Doug and Susan have always been passionate about creating the perfect cowherd and were led to develop their genetics by producing the very best grass finished beef for locals who were seeking nutrient dense, tender, and well marbled grass finished beef. We have been marketing grass finished beef in the Central Kentucky area for nearly 2 decades, using beef that was bred and raised using our genetics. The result is beef that is well marbled with fine texture, produced from cows requiring little inputs to maintain themselves. Today, they manage the farm with their daughter Chelsey, SIL Taylor, grandsons Tyler and Benjamin, son Jared and DIL Andrea.
